Preconditions established for Solar Energy Project implementation

 March 25th, 2022 Prishtina

In continuous efforts to modernize its services and create opportunities for as many citizens of Prishtina as possible to benefit from heating services, POE “Termokos” J.S.C has received support from the Government of the Republic of Kosovo. In its latest meeting, the government decided to allocate a 25-hectare plot in the village of Shkabaj for the implementation of the “Solar 4 Kosovo” project. This decision paves the way for one of the largest solar energy projects in Europe.

The implementation of this project is made possible by the generous support of international donors, particularly the German Government, as one of the largest donors of the POE “Termokos” J.S.C projects, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Meanwhile, the support from the Government of Kosovo, the Municipality of Prishtina, and the Municipality of Obiliq, has established one of the main prerequisites for the project’s implementation.

This major project will have the possibility of integrating two systems: solar energy and cogeneration. With the installation of 69,000 square meters of solar panels, POE “Termokos” will increase its capacity by 65 GWH/a supplying heating energy to 12,000 new consumers. One of the advantages of this project is the provision of clean energy, which will directly contribute to reducing air pollution for the residents of the capital as the enterprise expands its heating network.

As part of the “Solar 4 Kosovo” project, the construction of a thermal energy storage with a capacity of 400,000 m³ is also planned.

Funds for the implementation of the “Solar 4 Kosovo” project, valued at 64 million euros, have been provided by international donors. Of this amount, 26 million are grants from the German Government, while the remainder will be co-financed by the German Government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
